GENERAL INFORMATION

Climate

June to November is generally the best time of year Canoe in terms of wildlife concentrations. Much of the inland water has dried up, and game tends to move onto the riverfront for water. Temperatures are at the highest over September and October in the Valley.

November to March is the rainy season, waterproof clothing should be brought over this period.

May to July are the Winter months and  warm clothing
is necessary in the evenings

Guides

All River Horse guides have undertaken a rigorous guides training courses and are qualified to the National Parks recommendations having completed their training courses and passed their written exams.

All guides have a minimum training period of two years with the company prior to conducting their own tours. River Horse Safaris is to date, proud of the fact that we have an unblemished safety record.

 

 

Safety points of interest

  • Guides who are qualified through the Dept of National Parks lead all canoeing and walking safaris.

  • Safari Tourism Insurance covering, Emergency Medical Assistance involving Evacuation, Relocating and Repatriation

  • All safari guides carry HF Radio’s & First aid in H20 proof Pelican case.

  • Maintained a high standard of safety since the company’s inception in 1994, utilizing reliable 4x4 vehicles, boats (Lake Navigation control) and equipment.

  • All clients are briefed on the safety aspects on a canoeing safari prior to the trips departure. Further instruction on canoe handling is done on the waters edge.

 


 

General points of interest:

Geographically, the section of Zambezi that you will be canoeing is otherwise know as the Middle Zambezi with the section of river in the Mana Pools region having the highest recorded numbers of game and bird life on the entire Zambezi River.

 

In the evenings you will find it cold so it is advisable to bring It would be advisable for you to bring some form of waterproof clothing, as you will still

be in the tail end of the rains and may run into the occasional shower along the way.

 

Health

Any health concerns or medical conditions such as allergies, epilepsy etc should be brought

to the attention of the management prior to the start of the safari.

Medical consultation on Malarial prophylactics should be attained prior to the departure

from South Africa.

 

Age restrictions

Anyone under the age of 15 yrs old has to be accompanied by a parent.

 

 Group Size

We limit group sizes to 5 canoes, or 10 people. In your case you will probably have the trip closed off to you should you have your 8 participants.

 

Safety

  • All are canoe guides are qualified through the governing bodies of the Zambian Wildlife

  • and National Parks services.

  • All guides carry HF Radio’s and are in communication with our vehicles and base.

  • All guests are thoroughly briefed on safety procedures prior to departure.

  • We suggest that you take out travel insurance prior to your arrival in Zimbabwe and

  • Zambia.

 

Guideline on what to bring

Luggage: Maximum of 5kgs per person on multi-day safaris

Footwear: Comfortable walking shoes

Shirts/shorts: Neutral coloured clothing, longs sleeves for the fair skinned

Additional: Hats, Swimming trunks, Towel, sun block, insect repellent

Equipment: Camera, film, binoculars. Recharging facilities at River Horse

Optional: Fishing equipment & bait may be arranged on request

 

Visas

Current information must be obtained from River Horse Safaris before every safari.
