River Horse Expeditions was historically one of the first canoe safari operators in the Lower Zambezi and we proudly have a 20-year safety record. We put this down to two key ingredients...respect and knowledge.
Pre-trip briefings are made before we embark on our adventure and guests are given instructions on how to handle their own canoes before we set off downstream.
Our Guides are extremely respectful - affording wildlife right of way whilst on the water and allowing hippo, in particular, space to seek the safety of deep water. After many years of being on the river, our guides have developed an intimate knowledge of how best to navigate their groups safely downstream.
We take all necessary precautions to ensure our guests have a safe and pleasurable canoeing experience with us. Our Guides have been trained and qualified through the National Guides Association and each have spent years gaining the necessary river experience required to lead these trips.
No - it's time to switch off, unplug, detox from your iPhone!
Power is available at Breezes River Lodge camp before and after your canoe adventure. If you require charging units for your camera, it is important that you bring sufficient battery back-up for the duration of the trip, we will not have charging facilities for you. If you are booked on the 4 in 1 Canoe Trip we are able to charge batteries off a power inverter at our fly camp.
Our canoe safaris offer the ultimate family experience! There are not many opportunities in our busy lifetimes to completely unplug and spend such invaluable time with your loved ones. There is no cell phone reception here. Just the River, the wilderness and you. Swap stories around the campfire by dusk and marvel at the most incredible starlit skies by night. Daytime promises one-on-one time in your two-man canoe - learn about the wilderness and learn about your kids. Reconnect!
Generally, 15 years old is the minimum age limit. We will make an exception for 12-14 year olds travelling with families on a private trip - provided the child is able to listen and understand instruction and is accompanied by parents. If requested, we will provide a support boat that accompanies the canoeing party that carries provisions and younger children.
A private trip will be confirmed on min. payment of six guests.
We welcome all travellers with a keen sense of adventure on our canoe safaris! No prior experience is necessary - we will show you the ropes and provide instruction throughout the expedition.
A reasonable level of fitness is recommended, although not imperative as we generally go with the current - and wind permitting - it is reasonably easy going. Should we encounter strong winds, we will stop and allow the wind to subside before continuing. Being able to swim is essential!
We start our canoe safaris from approx March onwards - after the heavy rains each year. The best time for spotting wildlife in the Lower Zambezi National Park is during the dry season, which takes place from May to December - as thirsty animals gather at permanent waterholes and along the rivers edge. This is prime wildlife viewing and the best months to plan your canoe safari with us! Chat to us about our Winter and Summer months too when planning your adventure.
Yes, we can arrange (private or shared) transfers from Lusaka or Livingstone to Breezes River Lodge where we encourage guests to spend the night before your adventure begins. Breezes River Lodge is our base camp and it is here that you will meet us and your Guides, chat about what can be expected on your canoeing trail and answer any questions you might have!
Rates for transfers vary depending on group sizes.
Yes - guests on the Zambezi Great Canoe Trail (5 Night) have the option of flying into the Lower Zambezi and we will provide a river transfer from the airport to the camp at an additional fee.

Pack long-sleeved shirts and a towel to cover up your arms and legs whilst on the river – the sun can be very fierce when reflected back off water.
Sunglasses and a safari hat with decent coverage are also recommended to help combat the heat. Sun cream is another essential!
Don’t forget that temperatures will drop during the evening, so having at least one warmish fleece or jacket is a good idea.
Bring walking shoes for camp and any on-foot excursions with a separate pair of rafting sandals for use in the boat.
A torch and spare batteries are handy for when you’re onshore at the makeshift camp.
Pack any valuables such as a camera in waterproof bags, just in case!
Angling enthusiasts can often bring their tackle and equipment for a spot of fishing in the rivers.
A lightweight poncho is a good rain cover for canoeists.
Don’t overpack – limit your luggage to less than 10kg as you’ll be carrying everything in the canoes.

"Ant was incredibly helpful in advance of our trip and our guides on the river were just fabulous. Every part of the trip was perfect, and best of all we saw a huge amount of wildlife from close up. For my children this was the trip of a lifetime. I can’t recommend highly enough”
